By these impressions, each of us is drawn to the magical sounds of the Native American flute. Its magnetic expressiveness and overpowering beauty evoke a spirituality that adds to the traditions surrounding this unique instrument. The instrument also offers a new dimension to concert flutists, one that can embody a variety of musical styles and tones.
From this inspiration, and with the enthusiasm of composers, JP Zālo Publications is responsible for a catalogue of new repertoire for the Native American flute, published alongside contemporary music for concert flute. Modern woodwind techniques have been applied to extend the instrument’s scale patterns and stretch technical boundaries, as Native American flute techniques have been applied to the concert flute to extend timbral and compositional possibilities. We welcome these instrumental developments, honor the flute’s rich musical heritage, and remain respectful of its true source.
